The “E” is for “Economical.”
My first car was a 1980 light blue metallic Chevrolet Monza hatchback. I LOVED that car! It was my 16th birthday present from my parents. Part of my San Marino-born Dad’s American Dream was to be able to give his kids new cars when they turned 16... I’ll let the journaling tell the rest!

Journaling reads:
Part of Pop’s American Dream was to give his American-born kids new cars when they turned 16. The early 80’s was the middle of a slump in home building and Dad came to tell me he would have to buy me a used car. He was sorry because he wanted to give me a new one, but he just couldn't afford it right then. I stopped hearing the apology when it sunk in that he was giving me A CAR! While he was feeling bad that it couldn’t be new, I was on cloud nine.
It would be a few months before we got the car. It was Fluff’s contingency that I had to have a job to pay for the gas first. In December of 1982, when I was 16, I started my first job as a minimum wage deli-clerk. My first purchase with my first check was $10 for a full tank of gas for my new car!
Jonathan, named for Jonathan Livingston Seagull, was a great car. 35 MPG, only trouble I ever had that left me slightly stranded was a tire blow out on the freeway and it ran the last year of its life with only 3 of the 4 cylinders working properly and needing oil all the time, but I babied it and it was always dependable.
When the day came, five years later, that the Monza was traded in for payments on a new car, Fluff said she thought Pop was thinking of having the Monza bronzed! The way I loved and took care of that car had long erased any bad feelings he had that it wasn’t new, and replaced them with warm and fuzzies - “His baby-girl’s first car.”
