My other two cars...
Journalling reads:
I loved the Monza, it was dependable and important for a teenage girl, it was CUTE! I called it my “Baby Camaro,” telling everyone that it would grow up to be a Chevy Camaro one day.
Dave had gotten a car when he turned 16 too. Then, Dad replaced that car when he’d beaten it up too bad to drive it. Then Dad financed one more car after that! In the time it took my younger brother to go through 3 Bank of Dad cars, I babied and loved the Monza.
I was almost 21 years old. I still hadn’t quite managed to get up from the retail and food service minimum wage I’d started at when I was 16, but now I was working TWO jobs. One 40 hours a week on midnights and one that was about 30 hours a week on the day shift.
My midnight job was counter service and donut finisher at the local Dunkin Donuts. Most mornings I had a police escort home. I didn’t do anything wrong, I just served a lot of coffee to the local and state officers and THEY didn’t trust my car to get me the three miles home safely! It was time to amass how much I could afford for a new metal home for the spirit of my Jonathan!
I got a call at the fabric store I worked in by day. It was Pop. “What’s that car you like so much? Camaro?”
“Yes. But Pop, I can’t even think of affording a Camaro.”
Well, there was a rental company that was selling off the “old” cars in its fleet. Old is 10,000 miles. Two 1987 Camaros in the lot had 10,000 miles on in April of 1987. The price was about the price an ‘86 would sell for. Pop told me that because I’d taken such good care of my car and he’d spent much more on Dave’s three cars, he “owed me.”
The buzz from the Camaro in 1987 was bigger than the buzz from the Monza in ‘82! In 1994, when the new car had MY name on the title and no cosigner on the loan. I think Pop was as proud as I was when I drove the new Camaro home!
