But, instead of waiting for another ball to be hit, a player may want to advance his position by "stealing" the next base (running to it when the ball is not in play.) However, if he gets caught by the other team in between the bases, he's "out," and elminated from play. So, he must risk the base he's safely on in order to progress to the next step. A lot like real life!
