Journaling reads:
I can only remember one time when my grandfather built my sister and I a tipi for a few days during the summer one year when we were young, but thasingle event had such a big influence on my passions in life. It was just a blue tarp instead of buffalo hides, a few u-channel posts in place of the central poles, but to me it was a magical thing, a portal into the past. My grandmother had already fired my interest in tvarious tribes of Native Americans with poems, books and stories, the Song of Hiawatha was a real favorite, but it was Grandpa’s tipi that set me over the top. From that time until this I have never been able to learn enough about the amazing history of these remarkable people. While I love to learn about any and all tribes, it is the Lakota people of the Great Plains that will always fire my passion. I taught some of their customs, stories & language--the few dozen words I know, at least!--in middle schools across the county while working at a museum in Minnesota. I even wrote a small book for children centered around a young Dakota girl. And although I didn’t follow my dream of getting my PhD and teaching Native American History and Folklore, it hasn’t stopped me from reading and researching whatever I can get my hands on.
Thank you, Grandpa & Grandma
